Slee Blackwell solicitor James McNally has been recognised by the Attorney General Baroness Scotland as one of the country’s “Pro Bono Heroes” after establishing a website which provides free legal advice.
James was named a Pro-Bono Hero at a reception at the House of Commons as part of National Pro Bono Week, an annual event which celebrates lawyers, law students and other professionals who freely give their time and expertise to help ensure access to justice and an appreciation of legal rights and responsibilities for those who are unable to pay for help. The title of “Pro Bono Hero” was given for the first time this year as the Attorney General felt such work was often unrecognised and warranted recognition for the individuals involved and their achievements.
James, who in 2006 was named DELS Young Solicitor of the Year, was being thanked for his work on www.doyourselfjustice.co.uk which provides help and assistance on issues such as the Small Claims Court, Employment and Divorce as well as publishing relevant law related news and articles. James also deals with legal queries which are e-mailed to him via the website. In the last year there were 34,000 visitors to the site.
Baroness Scotland told James: “I am delighted to be able to describe you as a Pro Bono Hero for 2008. The work you do makes a tremendous change to the lives of people whose legal needs would otherwise go unmet.”
The Attorney General also praised Slee Blackwell for the help and support that the firm and all James’ colleagues give to the site.
Lee Dawkins, partner at Slee Blackwell says: “We are extremely proud of James and this acknowledgement for the work he does is justly deserved. Slee Blackwell has always strived to work with the local community and for one of our solicitors to get recognition for doing this on a national level is fantastic.”
