Great Ormond Street reviews patients treated by Yaser Jabbar

Great Ormond Street reviews patients treated by Yaser Jabbar, an orthopaedic surgeon and expert in limb reconstruction who worked at the hospital.

Great Ormond Street hospital, one of the top five children’s hospitals in the world, have seen themselves in the news as they announce that they are leading an urgent review of more than 700 patient’s cases after they received treatment by one of their former surgeons, Yaser Jabbar.

The consultant orthopaedic surgeon, who provided lower limb reconstruction, has come under investigation after it has been found that children have suffered a degree of harm, with some having suffered “severe harm” as a result of his procedures.

The stories of patients which have been released so far are incredibly sad, with one child undergoing an amputation which the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) review panel has now determined could have been avoided with different treatment, several children receiving surgery for which there seems to be no justification, and multiple other children having potentially life long injuries.

Partner at Slee Blackwell, Caroline Webber-Brown comments:

“I find the revelations surrounding the Great Ormond Street investigation very worrying. The number of young patients affected, and the severity of harm caused under a single surgeon’s care raise serious concerns about the robustness of internal oversight and patient safety protocols. For children undergoing orthopaedic treatment, precision and care are paramount, and, sadly, any deviation can have lifelong consequences for the children involved.  The families affected must feel profoundly let down by the care provided.  I would like to see a thorough investigation conducted, and systemic changes implemented to prevent further tragedies of this nature.”

There is no doubt that there will be claims of compensation against the hospital following the stories we are seeing in the news already.
