Due to the county’s relative geographical isolation it can sometimes be difficult for the Cornish to access specialist services and the legal sector is no exception.
However, when it comes to expert legal advice in relation to sex abuse victims are able to call upon support from lawyer Elizabeth Duncan.
Liz, who lives in Cornwall, is a specialist in sex abuse law and has recovered much needed financial compensation for victims of abuse. She was featured on the national ITV News recently talking about the problem of abuse in sport and she undertakes fundraising work for related charities including the NSPCC.
‘I recognise that every case is different’, says Liz, ‘and appreciate that victims of abuse respond in different ways to their experience. While some people are willing to discuss their experiences openly, others have difficulty confronting what has happened to them. So as a lawyer I have to be patient and allow things to proceed at a pace my clients feel most comfortable with.’
‘It’s important that victims of abuse do not feel pressurised by the legal process. Although there are time limits for making a legal claim for compensation the law recognises that sexual abuse is a special case and that it may be many years before some victims are able to feel comfortable discussing what has taken place.’
Her advice to victims of so called ‘historic abuse’ is that it’s never too late to do something about it.
Liz operates a free legal helpline for abuse victims. It’s a totally confidential service and there’s no obligation on people to proceed with legal action if they don’t wish to.
Worries about legal costs shouldn’t put people off as Liz is able to work on a No Win – No Fee basis.
You can call Liz in confidence on 0333 888 0404. Alternatively you can email her at [email protected]
And if you live in Cornwall and need a personal, face-to-face meeting then Liz can usually make suitable arrangements for this happen.
