What are the most common reasons for people suing a GP?
When we visit our GP, we trust that the information and advice they provide is correct and will ease any worries that we may have. However, unfortunately it is not always the case that a GP will provide you with the correct advice and their treatment of you may give rise to a case of GP negligence.
In this article we look at some of the most common reasons for people suing a GP.
Examples of GP negligence.
We see many negligence cases being brought against GPs as a result of misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, and treatment errors.
Misdiagnosis cases frequently feature cancer, but also include other medical conditions such as heart disease. GP misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis may involve:
- Missing key symptoms
- Drawing wrong conclusions based on inadequate examination
- Incorrect interpretation of test results
- Failure to conduct basic tests
- Failure to make a correct referral to a specialist for further investigation.
- In addition to misdiagnosed medical conditions, we also deal with cases involving GPs who have made an incorrect diagnosis. This can for example cause a patient to be put on the wrong medication, or being treated in a way that results in their condition being made worse.
Treatment errors can also include failure to consider a patient’s medical or family history. For example, a GP could prescribe a medication that the patient is allergic to.
