One of the most common injuries in the military are Musculoskeletal injuries, or MSKIs. MSK injuries are a significant concern within the UK Armed Forces, and are the leading cause of medical discharge among service personnel.
A study of 6,608 British Army recruits during a 26-week initial military training programme found that 48.6% of participants sustained musculoskeletal injuries. The most common diagnosis was iliotibial band syndrome, accounting for 6.2% of cases. Iliotibial band syndrome is pain in the knee or hip from repetitive bending in the knee, this could be from activities like running or cycling.
‘Musculoskeletal injuries’ is broad term that refers to injuries affecting the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. These injuries are more common in the forces because of the physically demanding nature of military training and operations. MSKIs include a wide range of injuries from acute injuries, such as fractures and sprains, to chronic conditions caused by repetitive stress and overuse.
MSKIs can often result in personnel suffering chronic pain, reduced mobility, and long-term disability. MSKIs can also cause psychological distress. Service members may experience feelings of frustration, helplessness, and anxiety due to their injuries. The inability to perform duties or engage in physical activities can contribute to depression and a reduced sense of purpose.
Musculoskeletal injuries can significantly affect military careers, often leading to medical downgrading or discharge. The physical demands of military service mean that even minor injuries can impact an individual’s ability to perform duties. Many individuals with MSKIs face impacted daily life, limitations in career progression, or may leave the service altogether. Indeed, MSKIs remain the primary reason for medical discharge from the UK Armed Forces.
