What is the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme?

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) aims to provide financial compensation for injuries or illnesses caused or worsened by service in the UK Armed Forces. The scheme covers incidents occurring on or after 6th April 2005. For injuries or illnesses sustained before this date, compensation falls under the War Pension Scheme.

The AFCS is managed by Veterans UK and operates on a tariff-based system, awarding set payments for service-related injuries. It is entirely separate from personal accident cover or life insurance and is designed to provide compensation regardless of fault, covering a wide range of circumstances. Receiving compensation through the AFCS does not affect an individual’s right to pursue a civil compensation claim if the injury, illness, or death resulted from negligence.

Who can make an AFCS claim?

The scheme applies to:

  • Current and former Armed Forces personnel, including reservists and special forces members.
  • Bereaved spouses or civil partners, who may be eligible for weekly Guaranteed Income Payments (GIP) if their partner’s death was service-related.

Processing Times and Statistics

During the 2023/24 financial year:

  • The median average processing time for an AFCS claim was 115 working days.
  • 4,296 injury/illness claims were registered and processed, with 57% awarded compensation—a 10% increase from the previous year.
  • A total of £131.3 million was paid in compensation for service-related injuries and illnesses.

Time limits for claims

  • Physical injury claims: Must be submitted within seven years of the date of injury.
  • Mental health claims: Must be made within seven years of first seeking medical treatment for the condition.

Making a civil claim alongside an AFCS claim

Individuals may be eligible to claim compensation through the AFCS while also pursuing a separate civil claim for compensation for personal injury and other loss.

Do I need to use a solicitor?

Claims can be made under the scheme without the involvement of a solicitor. However, the AFCS claims process can be technical, and professional legal involvement may help to secure the maximum compensation a claimant is entitled to. In some cases, relying solely on Veterans UK to assess a claim may result in a lower payout than you deserve.
