Korambayil data breach

Korambayil data breach: Surgeon jailed for accessing patient records.

A trainee surgeon has been jailed for accessing patient records without authorisation, now his victims are seeking compensation.

Salil Korambayil, who worked in Devon and Cornwall, has admitted to two counts of accessing patient records. This happened between 1st October 2019 – 31 October 2020 at a hospital in Truro, Cornwall, and between 26th January 2020 – 1st April 2020 at a hospital in Barnstaple, North Devon. Korambayil further admitted to a third count of unlawfully obtaining personal data from a Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.

The trainee surgeon has received two 12 month prison sentences for the offences which are to run concurrently.

Korambayil abused his position of trust to obtain information about women who he had a romantic interest in. He accessed personal details such as home addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses prior to pursuing his victims online. He went on to engage with some of the women on social media and exhibited flirty behaviour. Korambayil groomed two of his victims, who he met online, for over one year before going on to rape both of them in their homes. Korambayil was found guilty of these offences in December 2023 and was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.

Korambayil not only accessed the medical records of patients but also those of his male colleagues in order to disguise any intentions of furthering his advances with the women he had a romantic interest in.

Numerous individuals have had their data accessed by Korambayil. Hospitals are writing to the patients concerned to outline the events that have taken place and are been urged to contact them or the police if they have experienced any inappropriate conduct.

We are currently representing a number of clients who have been affected by Korambayil’s actions.
