The gynaecologist, Dr Fakher Gendy, has been at the centre of several controversies surrounding his conduct.
He originally made headlines for his mismanagement of maternity cases at the North Devon District Hospital, ultimately resulting in his suspension from NHS duties.
One of the maternity cases involved a woman who lost almost five pints of blood while giving birth, and required a blood transfusion. Dr Gendy was said to have ‘frozen in panic’ and reacted like a ‘rabbit caught in the headlights’ after his patient suffered heavy bleeding as she was being prepared for a caesarean section. Gendy was reported by colleagues as repeatedly saying ‘I didn’t expect this’.
Another patient graphically reported that she had been left feeling like a ‘cow giving birth to a calf’. Her newborn baby was left with bruises to their neck due to the force used by Dr Gendy. A paediatrician described it as the ‘roughest delivery I have ever witnessed’.
Dr Gendy was found guilty of serious professional misconduct and suspended from medical practice for nine months. He later announced his retirement from medical practice.
Action was subsequently taken against Gendy for performing unregulated aesthetic procedures. Operating under the name FEM-Aesthetics, he carried out a labiaplasty in June 2023 without being registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), a legal requirement for such procedures. His patient reportedly suffered severe emotional and physical harm as a result.
In May 2024, Dr Gendy pleaded guilty to violating the Health and Social Care Act 2008. He was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, and fined £5,154.
The case has drawn attention to the risks posed by unregulated medical services and the importance of CQC registration for safeguarding patient welfare in the UK.
