The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Birth Trauma held the first national inquiry in the UK Parliament to investigate the underlying causes of the recurring instances of birth trauma across the country.

A traumatic birth can have long-term effects on a mother, including flashbacks, nightmares, and negative thoughts related to their childbirth experience. It is estimated that 1 in 25 women develop post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of a traumatic birth.

Maternity negligence compensation claims can be made where the hospital is found to be at fault. It was recently announced that the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust had paid over £68 million in compensation to victims of childbirth and maternity medical negligence over the past 5 years. This is not the only NHS Trust in England and Wales to have paid large sums of compensation to victims of maternity negligence.

The goal of the inquiry was to ensure that mothers’ wishes and needs were prioritised in their care and to guarantee the health of their babies. As a result, the inquiry proposed a number of recommendations to ensure this aim is achieved, and to provide support for those affected by traumatic births.
